Peace deeds

Story taken from the survey launched on April 24th

It was during the most cruel days of the war in Bosnia: there was a massacre of children. Nowadays it is quite common, but for that time it was absolutely insane. We were barely 14 years old, projected into a future of peace and brotherhood, looking forward to rebuilding everything over the ruins of the Berlin Wall. The shock triggered in us the urge to act.

We had to invoke peace, raise awareness and educate the people to call upon the repudiation of war.

During the festivities, we papered the Ardito Desio Park with flyers, pictures and highly impacting slogans – at least we were convinced of that. The war didn’t stop immediately, but we found out that many were doing actions to ask for peace. We felt part of something bigger, which wasn’t impossible to reach, and for us it had started from the columns of the park… we could never have covered the “canvas” of the first real Friulian writers. The walls were theirs, not because they demanded it, but simply because the walls without their art were ugly and meaningless.

I believe that only at the “Parco di Cemento” it has been possible to breathe in and foresee what happens when we provide clever people with clever spaces. For a great part of its history, a lot of us have used this space in inspired solitude or surrounded by meetings which have then been impressed in our memories. Many of us have criticized the initial architectural roughness, but then, with time, helped by those who expressed themselves there with the audacious intention of communicating and leaving room for listening, we have been able to feel part of a world of possibilities, tolerant and always stimulating.
